Bridging Past and Present: Tafsir and the Contemporary Significance of ‘La Tahzan, Innallaha Ma‘ana’

  • Abstract :

The Qur’anic verse “La tahzan, innallaha ma‘ana” (“Do not grieve; indeed, Allah is with us”) holds profound spiritual and theological significance rooted in the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace and blessings be upon him) experience during the Hijrah. This paper examines classical and modern exegetical interpretations (tafsir) of the verse, exploring how it has been understood by major scholars such as al-Ṭabari, Ibn Kathir, al-Qurṭubi, and Ibn ‘Ashur. By situating these interpretations within their historical contexts, the paper reveals how the verse functioned as a divine reassurance in moments of fear and vulnerability. The analysis then shifts to contemporary readings, exploring how this verse continues to offer psychological, spiritual, and socio-political relevance for Muslims facing personal and collective challenges today. Through this bridge between classical tafsir and modern lived realities, the paper highlights the enduring resonance of Qur’anic guidance as a source of resilience, faith, and divine companionship across generations.
