Development of Affordable, Nutrient-Dense Complementary Foods Using Indigenous Ingredients for Children Aged 6–24 Months
The period from 6 to 24 months is critical for child growth and development because breast milk alone becomes insufficient to meet the increasing nutritional requirements of infants and young children. In many low- and middle-income communities, complementary diets are dominated by cereal-based foods and are frequently inadequate in energy, protein, fat, iron, zinc, calcium, vitamin A, and other essential micronutrients. The high cost of commercially formulated complementary foods further limits their accessibility to economically vulnerable households. The present study proposes the development of affordable, nutrient-dense complementary foods using locally available indigenous ingredients such as cereals, legumes, oilseeds, fruits, vegetables, and other appropriate nutrient-rich foods. Selected ingredients would be processed through cleaning, roasting, milling, blending, and appropriate cooking or drying techniques to improve nutritional quality, digestibility, acceptability, and storage stability. Different formulations would be developed by combining complementary plant ingredients to improve protein quality and increase energy and micronutrient density. The formulations would be evaluated for proximate composition, selected micronutrients, energy value, functional properties, microbiological safety, sensory acceptability, shelf stability, and cost per serving. Previous research indicates that locally produced complementary foods can improve dietary quality, while recent evidence demonstrates the feasibility of developing nutrient-dense infant foods from indigenous ingredients. The proposed approach could provide a culturally acceptable and economically feasible alternative to expensive commercial complementary foods and contribute to improved infant and young-child nutrition.
